What's actually happening in a soiled area rug

The rug looks gray down the middle. Colors read flat. Maybe there's a musty note when the room stays closed. That dullness is usually not stain. It's fine dry dust and mineral grit driven deep into pile by traffic. It sits at the base of the yarn, below where a vacuum reaches, and it scatters light. Fold a corner back and tap the foundation. So dusting comes before water. Grit extraction matters more here than heavy chemistry.
